Email
Unable to send or retrieve email using ISP's mail server
Some users may experience problems sending or retrieving
email from their ISP's email server. For security reasons,
many ISP's implement domain access restriction to their mail servers.
When this restriction is in place, the ISP mail server only grants access
to those computers with an IP address assigned by the ISP. During
a typical Turbo Internet session, your computer has a DIRECWAY assigned
IP address which your ISP's mail server may block.
Note: If you are using the DIRECWAY Satellite Return system, then you
may not be able to read or send email using your ISP's mail server if
you have selected the satellite as the return channel. (Click
here to learn more about the Turbo Internet
- Return Channel Properties) If you are using DIRECWAY's
mail server or an ISP "Powered By DIRECWAY", then should not
have any problems sending or receiving email when the satellite is selected
as the return channel.
If you have selected a modem or other terrestrial link as your return channel,
then the best solution to this problem is to configure the POP3 (for retrieving
email) and SMTP (for sending email) protocols to use terrestrial mode. When
a protocol is configured to operate terrestrially, Turbo Internet sends
and receives data over the modem. Since all data communication
for the configured protocol is done over the modem, the IP address seen
by the ISP's server is the IP address assigned by the ISP.
How to configure the POP3 and SMTP protocols to operate
terrestrially
- Verify the DIRECWAY Navigator application is running. The
Navigator icon should be visible in the system tray.
- Right mouse click on the Navigator icon to access
the Navigator pop-up menu. After the menu appears, select the
Turbo Internet Properties item.
- After the Turbo Internet Properties page appears,
select the Terrestrial tab. (Click here to learn more
about the Turbo Internet - Return Channel
Properties)
- On the Terrestrial tab there is a list box
that shows the protocols that are configured to operate terrestrially. If
there are existing entries for the POP3 and SMTP protocols, verify that
the checkbox before the protocol name is selected (checked).
- If the POP3 and SMTP entries are not displayed in
the list box, then you can manually add these protocols by clicking the
Add... button. After clicking the Add... button,
a Terrestrial Properties dialog appears prompting you to enter
various protocol information.
- To configure POP3, select TCP as the
protocol, enter POP3 as the Application Name and enter 110
as the Port Number. After making these entries, press the OK
button to save the changes. You should then see POP3 in the
list box with an unselected checkbox preceding the POP3 text. Click
on this checkbox to select the POP3 protocol for terrestrial mode.
- To configure SMTP, select TCP as the
protocol, enter SMTP as the Application Name and enter 25
as the Port Number. After making these entries, press the OK
button to save the changes. You should then see SMTP in the
list box with an unselected checkbox preceding the SMTP text. Click
on this checkbox to select the SMTP protocol for terrestrial mode.
- After adding and selecting the POP3 and SMTP protocols
to operate in terrestrial mode, click the OK button on the Turbo
Internet Properties page to save and apply the changes.
